Track & Field Concludes Day One At Wake Forest Open
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG track and field programs completed day one at the 2013 Wake Forest Open Friday at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem. The Spartans will conclude the Wake Forest Open Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
On the women's side, freshman Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) had the Spartans' top finish, placing third in the 1,500-meter "B" race. Jensen posted a personal-best time of 4:49.67 to finish just out of the top spot held by Buffalo's Hillary Swartwood (4:47.43).
Junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) placed fifth overall in the event with a time of 4:50.24 while freshman Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) came in 11th with a time of 4:52.64.
On the men's side, junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) and sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) highlighted the Spartans' performances.
Chelimo and Katam finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,500-meter race Friday evening narrowly finishing out of the top spot. Chelimo, the Southern Conference champion in the 1,500-meter distance, posted a time of 3:49.26 to finish second while Katam notched a personal-best time of 3:49.43 to finish third. Both times are the top two times so far this season in the SoCon by over 10 seconds. Wake Forest's Kyle Graves won the race narrowly out-touching the Spartans with a time of 3:48.36.
Additionally, freshman Josh Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) placed ninth with a time of 3:53.21, the third fastest time in the league so far this year.
