Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season At Seahawk Invitational
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCG track and field programs opened the outdoor season this weekend taking part in the UNCW Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington. The Spartans posted nine top five finishes in the two-day event at the Harold Greene Track.
The women's program had six individuals post top five finishes, including four freshmen who were running in their first career outdoor meets. Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) led the way with a second-place finish in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:21.05 while classmate Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) posted a time of 2:25.86 to finish fifth overall.
UNCG also captured three of the top five finishes in the women's 1,500-meter race with freshman Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) leading the way with a time of 4:50.78 to finish second in her first collegiate race at that distances. Freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished third with a time of 4:53.43 while junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnson) placed fifth with a personal-best time of 4:53.89.
Junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) rounded out the Spartans with top-five finishes as she placed third in the 400-meter race. Hall posted a personal-best time of 59:53 in the event.
On the men's side, the Spartans recorded three top five finishes in the first outdoor meet. Freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) turned in the Spartans' top finish as he placed second in the 800-meter race in a time of 1:56.87.
UNCG also posted a pair of top five performers in the 1,500-meter race. Junior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) notched a personal-best time of 4:00.50 to finish fourth while classmate Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) came in fifth in a time of 4:00.86.
The Spartans return to the track next weekend as they take part in the Wake Forest Open March 15-16 in Winston-Salem.
