Chelsea Sumney Finishes Second In 5,000-Meters At SoCon Championships
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG junior runner Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished just .03 seconds out of her first ever Southern Conference championship as she finished second in the 5,000-meter race at the 2013 SoCon Indoor Track and Field championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Sumney was vying for her first ever SoCon title as she battled Samford's Lauren D'Alessio the entire race holding the lead until the final lean at the finish line by D'Alessio. She finished in a facility-record time of 17:05.51, trailing D'Alessio who took home the top spot with a time of 17:05.48. The two runners were the only two in competition for the top spot as the third place finisher was almost 10 seconds back (Rachel Roberts, Samford - 17:14.88).
This is not the first time Sumney, D'Alessio and Roberts have battled down to the wire for the SoCon title as they were the top three finishers in this fall's SoCon cross country championships. In that race, D'Alessio finished first, followed by Roberts and Sumney.
