Schnell shatters own 5,000m record at Stanford Invitational
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Multiple UNCG records fell late Friday courtesy of the four Spartans competing at the Stanford Invitational. Paul Chelimo picked up right where he left off last weekend, this time running the second-fastest collegiate time in the country for 5,000 meters.
In a race with many professionals, Chelimo recorded a fifth-place finish in 13:32.89 to set a new school record.
Joey Thompson also had a stellar day for UNCG, crushing his own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.45, crossing the line in seventh place.
Paul Katam was just six seconds off his personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing the 6.2-mile race in 29:34.57.
Ashley Schnell also shattered the school record she owned in the 5,000m by 34 seconds. Her time of 16:01.54 was good for fourth place in her heat.
Several Spartans will be competing Saturday on the second day of the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
