Shaina & Chelsea Sumney Qualify For NCAA Regionals
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runners and twin sisters Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) have qualified for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Regionals, held May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by North Florida. To qualify for the NCAA East Regional, runners had to post times in the top 48 during the season.
Shaina qualified in two events at the NCAA East Regional, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter race. She posted the 19th fastest time in the steeplechase this season at 10:18.13 on May 4 at the Payton Jordan Invitational. She owns the 40th best time in the 5,000-meter distance, clocking in at 16:26.39 at the Stanford Invitational April 4.
Chelsea earned a spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to run with her twin sister by posting the 44th best time in the region. She clocked in at a time of 10:27.64 at the Virginia Challenge May 9, in her second to last race of the season.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase is slated as the last race of the day May 30 at 9:30 p.m. while the 5,000-meter contest is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at 8:45 p.m. The top 12 finishers in each race will advance to the NCAA National Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
