GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runner Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took home the top honors in the 1,500-meter race at the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier Friday evening at Paul Derr Track Facility. Sumney won the event by posting a UNCG program-record time of 4:23.39.

Shaina posted the top time, clocking in at 4:23.39 to defeat runners from N.C. State, Duke and North Carolina, among others. Her time was a career-best time, trimming almost 10 seconds off her top time, but ranks 58th in the region. Her time narrowly topped Ashley Schnell's previous school-record time of 4:23.57 set in 2012 and is the second-fastest time in the Southern Conference this season.

Sister
Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished 10th in the same race with a time of 4:34.22, a time just off her personal-best showing last season at the Duke Invitational.

Both Sumneys are currently in line for a bid to the NCAA East Regional in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. All final times must be completed by 11:59 p.m. Sunday night. Shaina currently sits 16th in the region with a time of 10:18.13 while Chelsea is 37th with a time of 10:27.64.
