Cross Country/Track Names Benji Wetli Assistant Coach
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG country/track and field interim head coach Chad Pearson announced the addition of Benji Wetli as an assistant coach Wednesday. Wetli joins the Spartans from the cross country/track and field program at Iowa State where he was an volunteer assistant coach for the last three years.
“We are very excited to have Benji join the Spartan family,” Pearson said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge to our program and will help improve our teams in all areas, including competition and recruiting. After serving as an assistant coach at Iowa State which is nationally known for distance running success, he will certainly help continue the tradition of a strong distance running program at UNCG. Benji loves the sport of cross country/track on the collegiate level and that will serve the UNCG running programs well as he begins his duties in Greensboro.”
During Wetli’s time in Ames, Iowa, the Cyclones produced one of the top programs in the country in both cross country and track and field. He helped Iowa State notch three National Championship performers, 25 NCAA All-America honors, 13 Big 12 Conference Champions and 98 All-Big 12 Conference recipients in just three years.
“I am thrilled to be joining the UNCG cross country and track & field staff,” Wetli said. “I am very thankful to Chad and the UNCG administration for this opportunity. I am excited to help contribute to the continued development of the Spartan running programs as we build off the success of the past several years.”
Wetli helped the women’s cross country program at Iowa State to Big 12 Conference championships in 2011 and 2012 as well as three straight NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The Cyclones finished in the top 11 in the nation in women’s cross country all three years during his time there, including a seventh place finish in 2011.
The women’s indoor track and field team at Iowa State placed ninth in the NCAA Championships in 2013 and 10th in 2012. The women’s program finished the 2013 season in fourth place in the Women’s Program of the Year standings.
Wetli is certified a USA Track & Field Level 1 coach. He ran collegiately at NCAA Division III St. Norbert College as a cross country and distance athlete. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Norbert in 2010 while also securing his Master of Science in Kinesiology from Iowa State in 2013.
