GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 48 UNCG men’s golf team sits in fifth place after 36 holes of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at the Kingsmill Resort River Course Monday. The River Course plays a par-70 at 6,765 yards and the Spartans will tee off in the third and final round Tuesday, weather permitting, with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start on holes No. 1-4.
The Spartans fired a 6-over par 286 in the second round, trimming seven shots off their total of 293 in round one to sit at 19-over par 579. No. 50 Texas Tech leads the field with a 566 (288-278) while Eastern Michigan is second with a 574 (288-286) as UNCG is just five strokes out of second place.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) continues to be the top Spartan at the event as he is tied for second place, just two shots off the lead with a 2-under par 138. Jenkins opened the tournament with a 2-under par 68 in round one and followed that up with an even-par 70 Monday when he carded two birdies, two bogeys and 14 par scores. He is tied with Clement Sordet of Texas Tech at 138 while Ryan Rettburg of Radford leads the way with a 4-under par 36 (69-67).
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) is the second Spartan in the top 15 as he sits in a tie for 14th place overall. Dixon is 4-over par with a 144 after recording back-to-back 72’s in the first two rounds of play. Monday’s highlight included an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 15 hole, while also posting two birdies.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) made the biggest move of the day, climbing 27 spots on the leaderboard to move into a tie for 38th place. Coalson rebounded from a first round score of 76 to record a 1-over par 71 Monday for a 36-hole score of 147.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) improved four strokes in day two, recoding a 2-over par 73 and is in 52nd place with a 150. Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) withdrew from round one due to an illness but returned in round two with a 5-over par 75.
