Menís Soccer Travels To Wofford Saturday For Pivotal SoCon Contest
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team hits the road Saturday evening for a pivotal Southern Conference meeting against Wofford at Snyder Field at 6 p.m. The game pits the top two teams in the SoCon standings point-wise against each other and the winner of the game will take over sole possession of first place in the standings. The game will have pay-per view video and live stats via Wofford ($5.95), with links available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans are riding a four-game unbeaten streak into Saturday’s game with ties against Campbell and Furman, while picking up wins over Appalachian State and Davidson. Since the second half of the Campbell game, the Spartans have out-scored opponents by a 6-2 margin over a span of 335 minutes. UNCG sits in second place in the SoCon with a 2-0-1 record and seven points in the standings. The Spartans trail only Wofford, which owns a 3-1-0 record, good for nine points in the standings, but the Terriers have played one more game then UNCG in league play.
The Spartans have scored 18 goals this season with nine different players finding the back of the net. Junior David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest) leads the team in scoring with 11 points, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists. Redshirt sophomore Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule) is tied for second on the team in scoring with three goals, including the game-winning tally Tuesday night against Davidson. Reittinger and senior defender Mahdi Ali (Vuosaaren Lukio) are tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals apiece.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) has played all but 65 minutes in goal this season. Moffitt owns a 1.22 goals against average this year and has posted six shutouts, good for second in the SoCon. He has a 0.62 goals against average in SoCon play this season through the first three games, which ranks second in the league.
Wofford enters the game with a 7-5-1 record on the year and a 3-1-0 mark in league play. The Terriers have picked up league wins over Davidson, Georgia Southern and Elon while falling most recently at Appalachian State. Wofford also owns a 5-0-0 record this season at home at Snyder Field.
The Terriers have scored 27 goals this season and allowed 20 goals against in 13 games. Connor Davis leads the team in scoring with 20 points as he has scored eight goals and dished out four assists. Davis leads the SoCon in both points and goals this season. Nestor Jaramillo is second on the team in scoring with 12 points on the strength of four goals and four assist. Garrett Closs has played 826:05 minutes in goal this season, including every minute in SoCon play. Closs has an 1.85 goals against average on the year and a 1.23 mark in the four league games.
Saturday’s game marks the 22nd meeting all-time between UNCG and Wofford, dating back to the 1997 season. The Spartans own an 18-2-1 record all-time against the Terriers, including a 15-1-1 record during the regular season. UNCG owns an 8-1-0 record all-time in Spartanburg, including an 8-0-0 record during the regular season. Last time the Spartans visited Wofford, they posted a 4-0 victory in 2011. Forward Austin Miller (Jamestown, N.C./High Point Christian) scored two goals and assisted on another in the four-goal victory, while Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) scored the game’s first goal.
Wofford recorded its first-ever regular season victory over the Spartans last year, snapping a 16-game unbeaten streak for UNCG in the regular season in the series. The Terriers scored the game-winning goal in the 110th minute, scoring with 56 seconds left in the second overtime to claim a 1-0 victory. Blair Gaines scored on a header in the box off a Jaramillo cross to seal the victory.
