Menís Soccer Hosts Davidson Tuesday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team carries its three-game unbeaten streak into Tuesday’s Southern Conference contest against Davidson as the Spartans enter with a 1-0-1 league record while the Wildcats boast a 1-2-0 mark in SoCon action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium with live video and live stats available via www.uncgspartans.com.
UNCG enters with a 6-5-2 overall record on the year and is coming off its first victory in league play with a 2-1 victory on the road at Appalachian State. The Spartans had posted back-to-back ties prior to that game, picking up points against Campbell in the non-conference and Furman in the league opener this year.
Senior defender Mahdi Ali (Vuossaren Lukio) and sophomore Noah DeAngelo (Burlington, N.C./Bishop McGuiness) scored the Spartans’ two goals against the Mountaineers, both tallies coming in the second half. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) picked up his sixth victory of the season as he made seven saves, including thwarting a second half penalty kick. Moffitt has a 1.24 goals against average this season with six shutouts.
Eight different Spartans have scored goals this season with junior David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest) leading the way with 10 points as he has scored a team-high four goals and dished out two assists. Senior Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) is second on the team in scoring with eight points as he has dished out four assists and added two goals while Ali is third on the team with three goals and an assist.
Davidson enters Tuesday’s game with a 6-5-1 overall record and a 1-2-0 mark in SoCon play. The Wildcats own a league win over Georgia Southern while dropping games to Wofford and most recently a 2-0 decision to Furman Tuesday night. The Wildcats have scored 17 goals this season with nine different players finding the back of the net. Valeriy Sviderskiy leads the team in scoring with 12 points as he has scored six goals while Max Pragnell has dished out a league-high six helpers.
Davidson has used three goalkeepers this season with Matt Pacifici leading the way with 911:45 in goal. Pacifici owns a 1.18 goals against average while posting two shutouts.
Tuesday’s game marks the 27th meeting all-time between UNCG and Davidson with the Spartans holding a 17-7-2 advantage in the series. The Spartans are 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings against the Wildcats, including a dominating 4-0 victory last year on the road in the SoCon opener. Forward Hakan Ilhan set a UNCG single-game record for assists in the NCAA Division I era as he dished out four helpers in the victory. The Spartans scored four first half goals, including three in a seven minute stretch in the dominating performance.
