Menís Soccer Hosts Longwood Saturday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team wraps up its three-game home stretch Saturday night as the Spartans welcome in Longwood for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium with live video and live stats available at www.uncgspartans.com.
UNCG enters the game with a 4-4-0 record after dropping a 1-0 contest Wednesday night to visiting Winthrop. The Spartans fell victim to a goal with just 1:53 left in regulation. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) made a career-high eight saves in the loss. Moffitt has played every minute in goal for the Spartans and owns a 1.25 goals against average on the year.
All four of the Spartans victories this season have come by shutout as they are out-scoring opponents 7-0 in victories while being out-scored 10-2 in their losses. Four different Spartans have scored goals this season with junior David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest) leading the way with three goals and an assist. Seniors Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Mahdi Ali (Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio) each have tallied two goals along with redshirt sophomore Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule).
Longwood enters Saturday’s game with a 1-3-2 record on the season and will be playing its first road game since Sept. 1 as they just finished a four-game home stand. The Lancers posted a 2-2 double overtime time last time out in their Big South opener against High Point as they allowed a goal in the 88th minute by the Panthers to tie the game. Additionally, the Lancers have defeated IUPUI and tied Pittsburgh while dropping games to Duquesne, Davidson and American.
Longwood has scored five goals in six games and has allowed eight goals against. Mike Durr leads the Lancers with two goals while Rhys Cairns has scored a goal and handed out an assist. Paul Hegedus and Carlos Canas have split time in goal this season. Hegedus has played 335 minutes in goal and has an 1.07 goals against average while Canas has played 245 minutes and has a 1.47 goals against average.
Saturday’s game marks the 10th meeting between UNCG and Longwood. The Spartans lead the all-time series by a 7-1-1 margin and the two teams are playing for the fifth consecutive year. UNCG has gone 2-1-1 against the Lancers since the series restarted in 2009, including a 4-1 victory on the road last year in Farmville, Va.
In that game, the two teams combined for five yellow cards and four red cards as UNCG finished with 10 on the field and the Lancers with eight. Longwood jumped out to an early lead with a Devin Pierce goal in the third minute but the Spartans answered back with two goals in the first half and two in the second half. Midfielder Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) scored two goals off of corner kicks, including the game-winning goal in the 24th minute. Former Spartans Hakan Ilhan and Jannick Martens added goals in the 4-1 victory.
