Men's Soccer Announces 2013 Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's soccer head coach Justin Maullin announced an 18-game regular season schedule for the 2013 season that includes four games against NCAA Tournament teams and nine games at the UNCG Soccer Stadium where the Spartans have a 145-57-20 career record.
"We once again set out to make a very challenging schedule that will put our team in a position for a possible at-large spot at the end of the year," Maullin said. "There are no easy games on our schedule as we will be challenged each and every time we step onto the field. Our strength of schedule will make our team fully prepared for postseason play and place us in a good standing with the selection committee."
The Spartans open the 2013 season with a pair of exhibition contests beginning Aug. 17 when UNCG hosts Gardner-Webb in the first of a soccer exhibition doubleheader with the women's program (vs. NC State). UNCG will wrap up its exhibition slate Aug. 25 when it travels to Liberty.
The Spartans kick off the regular season at home Aug. 30 when they host instate foe UNC Asheville. UNCG posted a 5-0 victory over the Bulldogs last year on the road and is 11-0-1 all-time against them.
UNCG hits the road for the first time in the regular season Sept. 4 when it travels Charlotte, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round last year. The Spartans and 49ers battled to a high-intensity 1-1 draw in double overtime last year in Greensboro with Hakan Ilhan scoring the game-tying goal against then fourth-ranked Charlotte.
After a second road game at James Madison (Sept. 7), the Spartans return home to the UNCG Soccer Stadium for back-to-back formidable challenges. UNCG will host rival High Point Sept. 11, which is coming off a 12-win season, and Big South defending champion Coastal Carolina Sept. 14. The Chanticleers posted a 20-3-2 record last year on their way to the NCAA Round of 16.
UNCG hits the road for its first of two games against an Atlantic Coast Conference foe Sept. 17 when it travels to Clemson. The Spartans round out the month of September with three more home games against UNCW (Sept. 21), Big South Tournament Champion Winthrop (Sept. 25) and Longwood (Sept. 28).
The month of October sees the Spartans open on the road for back-to-back non-conference games at Georgia State (Oct. 1) and Campbell (Oct. 5). UNCG opens Southern Conference play at home Oct. 8 when it hosts Furman. Last season, the Spartans snapped the Paladins' 16-match home unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory as forward Austin Miller scored the game's lone goal in the 80th minute.
The Spartans rotate road and home conference games the rest of the way travelling to Appalachian State (Oct 12), Wofford (Oct. 19) and defending SoCon Tournament champion Elon (Nov. 2) while also hosting league foes Davidson (Oct. 15) and Georgia Southern (Oct. 26). The 2013 UNCG Homecoming Weekend will be held in conjunction with the Oct. 26 game against Georgia Southern, which will serve as this year's Homecoming Game.
UNCG will wrap up its non-conference portion of the schedule Oct. 29 when it travels to ACC foe Virginia. The Cavaliers earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament last season and finished with a 10-7-4 overall record.
The 2013 SoCon Tournament kicks off Nov. 9 with first round games on campus of the higher seeds. The SoCon Tournament semifinals and finals will be held in Greenville, S.C., on the campus of Furman Nov. 15 and 17, respectively.
