GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's soccer team wraps up its four-game home stand Tuesday night as the Spartans welcome in the College of Charleston in Southern Conference action at 7 p.m. Live stats and free live video are available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans enter the game with a 4-6-2 overall record and a 2-1-0 mark in SoCon play after dropping their first league game of the season with a double overtime loss to Wofford Saturday. UNCG sits in a tie for first in the conference standings with six points on the year, matching Elon who has also won two games.
Senior forward Hakan Ilhan
(Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) leads the Spartans offensively scoring 17 points, on the strength of six goals and five assists. Junior Oddur Gudmundsson
(Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) is second on the team in scoring with five goals.
Defensively, junior Mahdi Ali
(Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio) anchors the backline that has allowed 17 goals this season while posting three shutouts. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Peyton Ford
(Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford) has played 1073:46 in goal and owns a 1.42 goals against average. Ford has allowed just one goal in three SoCon game this year after only allowing one all of last season.
Tuesday's game marks the 25th meeting all-time between UNCG and the College of Charleston. The Spartans hold a 17-6-1 record all-time against the Cougars, including a 1-0 victory in Charleston last year. Ilhan scored the game's lone goal in the victory as he found the back of the net in the 12th minute off a Gudmundsson assist. Ford posted seven saves in the victory while recording the shutout.
CofC enters the game with a 5-7-0 record overall and a 1-1-0 mark in SoCon play as it has played six teams ranked in the top 40. The Cougars are coming off a 3-0 victory at home over Appalachian State as they improved to 4-1-0 at home. CofC is 0-5 away from home this season with losses at South Carolina, Rutgers, Monmouth, Coastal Carolina and Furman.
Sean de Silva leads the Cougars in scoring with 11 points on the year as he has scored four goals and handed out three assists. CofC has scored 15 goals in 12 games while allowing 15 goals against. Kees Heemskerk has played all by 2:02 in goal for the Cougars and has a 1.25 goals against average with three shutouts.
