Men's Soccer Heads To Georgia Southern Tuesday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a week off from action, the UNCG men's soccer team returns to the field Tuesday night as it travels to Statesboro, Ga., to face Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern in a pivotal league contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in just the second night game all-time at Eagle Field.
The Spartans are coming off of back-to-back heartbreaking losses in league play, dropping double-overtime contests to Wofford and the College of Charleston at home. Senior forward Hakan Ilhan (Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) leads the team and is tie for third in the SoCon in scoring with 18 points as he has scored a team-high six goals and dished out six assists.
UNCG has scored 21 goals in 13 games this season with 10 different players having scored goals. Junior Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) is second on the team in scoring with five goals. The Spartans have allowed 19 goals against this season as fifth-year senior goalkeeper Peyton Ford (Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford) has a 1.46 goals against average.
Georgia Southern enters Tuesday's game with a 2-10-1 overall record and a 0-2-1 mark in SoCon play. The Eagles are 0-9-1 over their last 10 games with a tie coming against Appalachian State. Georgia Southern is coming off one of its top performances of the season as it fell to nationally ranked Elon 4-3 in overtime.
The Eagles have scored 16 goals this season with Reed Norton leading the charge with 10 points, on the strength of three goals and four assists. Drew Ruggles is second on the team in scoring with eight points as he has scored three goals and handed out a pair of assists. Georgia Southern has allowed a league-high 31 goals. Jack Falle has played eight games in goal with a 2.50 goals against average with Neal Bates has played five games with a 2.03 goals against average.
Tuesday's game marks the 23rd meeting all-time between UNCG and Georgia Southern. The Spartans hold a commanding 18-1-3 mark all-time against the Eagles. UNCG has won four straight games against Georgia Southern, out-scoring the Eagles 19-2 since 2009.
Last season, the Spartans tallied a strong 5-0 victory over Georgia Southern at home in Greensboro. Ilhan and forward Austin Miller (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) each scored two goals in the victory while Gudmundsson tallied a goal and three assists in the dominating victory.
