Men's Soccer Knocks Off Virginia Tech At ACC Hall Of Champions Showcase
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second straight year, the UNCG men's soccer team turned in a strong showing at the ACC Hall of Champions Showcase as the Spartans downed Virginia Tech 3-1 at Bryan Park and MacPherson Stadium Saturday. The Spartans are 2-0 in the event all-time after posting a 2-1 victory over defending national champion North Carolina last spring.
"We really enjoy coming to this event and supporting youth soccer at beautiful Bryan Park," head coach Justin Maullin said. "This is the second year in a row we have knocked off an ACC school, and I could not be prouder of the team. We scored three very good goals and I am certainly pleased for Chandler, Goodie and Dustin. This was a solid team effort and something we will look to build on."
The Spartans attacked from the very beginning as forward Austin Miller (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) got in behind the Virginia Tech defense in the 20th minute of play. Miller beat the Virginia Tech goalkeeper on the breakaway, but his shot clanged off the post to keep the game scoreless.
UNCG opened the scoring just before halftime in the 40th minute of play as Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) took the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and took a few touches before playing a short pass to freshman Chandler Chappell (Hamptonville, N.C./Starmount). Chappell hit a one-time shot from 18-yards out into the corner, beating the Virginia Tech goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the second half as Jake Fields (Newtown, Pa./Villanova) sent a cross through the box to Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) near the sideline. Gudmundsson worked a perfect give-and-go with Lukas Zarges (Friedrichsdorf, Germany/Phillip Reis Schule) in the box before hammering a low line drive past the Hokie goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead.
After a Virginia Tech goal, the Spartans regained their two-goal lead late in the second half. Zarges played a 40-yard through ball into the box where an on-charging Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbelschule) was able to beat the Virginia Tech goalkeeper to the ball. Gamradt poked the ball past the goalkeeper and held off a Hokie defender before depositing it into the side netting.
Davis Griffin (Raleigh, N.C./Leeseville Road) and Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) each played 45 minutes in the victory, posting two saves apiece.
The Spartans close out the spring season Saturday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium where four games will be played. UNCG will face Methodist at 10 a.m. and VMI at 11:30 a.m. before the UNCG Alumni play a game at 1 p.m. The final contest of the afternoon will see Methodist and VMI meet at 2 p.m.
