GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wofford plated four runs in the final two innings Friday to walk away with a 5-4 comeback victory over UNCG at Russell C. King Field in the opener of a Southern Conference series. The Spartans fall to 21-22 overall and 8-11 in league play while the Terriers improve to 26-25 and 8-13.

Senior Sean Guite (Huntington Beach, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) went 2-for-5 in the contest with a run scored while junior Eric Kalbfleisch (Pilot Mountain, N.C./North Stokes) tallied two RBIs.

Junior Tyler Frazier (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) took the loss after allowing an earned run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Will Stillman picked up the victory for Wofford, throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

UNCG opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, plating a pair of runs thanks to RBI singles by redshirt freshman Julian Abreu (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) and freshman Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside). A double steal by the Terriers pulled them within 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.

The Spartans looked to take control in the top of the seventh. With one out, redshirt junior Zac MacAneney (Gibsonville, N.C./Virginia Tech) and Guite singled and advanced to second and third after a fielding error by Wofford. Kalbfleisch came through in his at bat, ripping a ball to the gap in right center to score both runners and make it 4-1 in favor of UNCG.

The Terriers began their comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Eric Brenk was hit by a pitch and Conor Clancey drove a ball over the wall in left field, cutting the Blue and Gold’s lead to 4-3. With two outs, James Plaisted notched a RBI Single to knot the score going to the ninth.

After the Spartans went down in order in the top of the ninth, Wofford loaded the bases via a single and two walks issued by Frazier. Down to his last strike, Alex Paradowski roped a single to right field that scored the winning run.

The teams will continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m.
