Women’s Golf Wraps Up Day One At Bryan National Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team opened the annual Bryan National Collegiate Friday at the Bryan Park Champions Course, co-hosted by the Spartans and Wake Forest. Round two is slated a shotgun start Saturday at 8:30 a.m., weather permitting, while the third and final round will have an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday morning.
Sophomore Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) was the Spartans’ top finisher Friday, posting a 2-over par 74 to sit in a tie for 20th place. Buchanan had three birdies and five bogeys on the afternoon to go along with her 10 par scores. She is coming off back-to-back top 15 finishes at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational and the Kiawah Invitational.
The Spartans as a team are in 18th place with a 325 score in round one. No. 3 Duke leads the event with a 4-over par 292 while No. 22 Michigan State is only two shots behind with a 294.
The field includes co-hosts UNCG and No. 19 Wake Forest along with No. 3 Duke, No. 8 South Carolina, No. 13 Clemson, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 18 Florida, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 23 NC State, No. 26 Ohio State, No. 27 North Carolina, Virginia, Louisville, Florida State, Tennessee, College of Charleston, Penn State and UNCW.
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) was the Spartans’ second finisher Friday, sitting tied for 70th overall. Bjornsdottir posted a 7-over par 79 with a birdie on hole No. 9. Sophomore Andrea Rangel (Bogota, Columbia/Collegio la Presentacion) posted an 85 while freshman Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had an 87 and freshman Maddie MacClurg (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) with an 89 rounds out the lineup.
