GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team opens the spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Central District Invitational hosted by Michigan State at the Cypress Links Golf Course at Lakewood Ranch in Florida. The 54-hole event will see 36 holes played Monday on the par-72, 6,325-yard course, while the final 18 holes will be played Tuesday. Live scoring is available at www.birdiefire.com.
The 14-team field at the Central District is one of the top fields in the country this week as six different ranked teams will take part in the event. Joining the Spartans will be No. 22 Central Florida, Chattanooga, Houston, Indiana, No. 37 Louisville, No. 24 Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 48 Notre Dame, Oakland, Rutgers, No. 45 SMU, Toledo and No. 15 Vanderbilt.
Leading the way for the Spartans is sophomore Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) who owned the top scoring average for UNCG in the fall at 78.08. Buchanan’s best finish of the fall was an 11th place showing at the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament where she was 7-over 220.
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) is the most experience Spartan on the team, having appeared in 70 rounds in her collegiate career. She carded a 78.83 stroke average in 12 rounds during the fall. Freshman Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounds out the top three for UNCG as she also played all 12 rounds in the fall and had a 82.83 stroke average.
