DAY ONE RESULTS (PDF)

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – UNCG freshman golfer Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) posted her first collegiate hole-in-one Sunday to highlight day one of the 2013 Southern Conference Championships for the Spartans at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The Spartans finished the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event in a tie for sixth place overall with a 315.

Buchanan stepped up par-3 139-yard seventh hole just after noon Sunday and pulled a seven iron out of her bag. She lofted the ball onto the green and landed it three paces in front of the hole, before it rolled directly into the cup for the ace. Her hole-in-one is the first of her collegiate career and the Spartans' second of the season as senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) posted one at the Kiawah Island Classic. Buchanan finished the day in a tie for 25th overall with an 8-over par 80 despite being even after 12 holes.

Sophomore Fanny Cnops (Ghent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) led the Spartans on the leader board with a 5-over par 77 to sit in a tie for 15th place overall. Cnops sits five strokes off the lead of even-par 72 held by co-leaders Emily McLennan of Chattanooga and Sunna Vidisdottir of Elon. She started slowly on the day dropping five shots in her first 10 holes before ending the afternoon with eight straight pars.

Taylor sits in a tie for 21st overall with a 6-over par 78. She opened the afternoon with eight straight pars and was just 1-over through 13 holes, but had a triple-bogey on No. 14 and a bogey on holes No. 16 and No. 18. Freshman Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) each turned in 8-over par scores to sit in a tie for 25th place overall.

Three-time defending SoCon Champion Chattanooga leads the event after one round after posting a 297. The Mocs placed four players in the top five of the individual leader board Sunday. Furman is second overall with a 302 while the College of Charleston is second with a 305.

The Spartans will continue the three-day event Monday with round two tee times at the Moss Creek Golf Club between 9:40-10:20 a.m.
