Women's Golf Travels To The UNCW Seahawk Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team closes out the regular season this weekend when the Spartans travel to Wilmington, N.C., to take part in the 2013 UNCW Seahawk Classic. The 54-hole event will be held at the River Landing Golf Course with 36 holes played Saturday before the final round Sunday. Both days will begin with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.

The 14-team field includes UNCG, Bucknell, Delaware, Elon, Georgia State, Longwood, Middle Tennessee, Morehead State, Navy, Old Dominion, Princeton, Richmond, South Alabama and host UNCW. The River Landing Golf Course will play at 6,120 yards for the par-72 course located in Wallace, N.C.

The Spartans are led into the weekend by sophomore Fanny Cnops (Ghent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) who was named the Southern Conference Golfer of the Week last week. Cnops leads the SoCon with a 73.15 stroke average through 20 rounds this year after leading the league as a freshman last year at a 72.34 stroke average when she was the Freshman and Player of the Year. Cnops finished 17th overall at the Bryan National Collegiate last week in a field that included 14 nationally ranked teams and 24 nationally ranked individuals, including Cnops at No. 61 in the country.

Senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) is second on the team with a 77.61 stroke average on the year. Taylor finished tied for 82nd at the Bryan National last weekend which snapped a string of back-to-back top 25 finishes. She finished tied for 21st at the Kiawah Invitational and tied for 10th at the Mountain View Collegiate when she earned SoCon Golfer of the Week accolades.

Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) is third on the team with a 78.50 stroke average. She finished in a tie for 68th at the Bryan National as she fired a 3-over par 75 in the final round on the tough course. Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) is fourth on the team with a 78.52 stroke average while freshman Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) rounds out the Spartans in the top five of the lineup.
