Cnops & Taylor Lead Women's Golf To Second Place After Day One At Seahawk Classic
WALLACE, N.C. – Sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) and senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) led the UNCG women's golf team to a second place standing in the UNCW Seahawk Classic after 36 holes Saturday at the River Landing Course. The Spartans will battle for both the team and individual titles with the final round Sunday beginning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
UNCG sits just three shots out of the top spot in the team standings after shooting a 616 through the first 36 holes of play. The Spartans posted a first round score of 312 before rebounding with the lowest team score of the afternoon in round two, shooting a 304. UNCG is tied with Old Dominion in second place and trails only tournament host UNCW which carded a 613 (305-308).
Cnops, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, finished the first two rounds in sole possession of first place in the individual standings with a 2-over par 146 to hold a one shot lead over Kelly Shon of Princeton and Lori Beth Adams of host UNCW. Cnops opened the event with a 2-over par 74 in the first round to sit in fourth after 18 holes, but moved into the top spot with the best score of the afternoon, firing an even-par 72 to move up three spots. She is vying for her first individual win of the season and her first since winning back-to-back events last year in the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
Taylor is just three shots out of the lead and is tied for fourth place overall at 5-over par 149. She was tied with Cnops after one round with a 2-over par 74 before posting a 3-over par 75 in round two. She is even with Ariel Witmer of Longwood and Maria Palacios of Georgia State for fourth place. Taylor is shooting for her top finish of her senior campaign as she entered the year with her best showing a 10th place finish at the Mountain View Collegiate.
Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) sits in a tie for 25th place overall with a 13-over par 157. Buchanan started Saturday with a tough first round, firing an 81 before rebounding with a second round tally of 176. Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) is tied for 50th place with a 164 and freshman Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) rounds out the Spartans with a 174 to finish in 64th place.
The final round of the Seahawk Classic kicks off Sunday morning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start at the River Landing Course.
