Moving Day! Women's Golf Charges Up Leaderboard In Day Two Of SoCon Championships
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The UNCG women's golf team vaulted up the leaderboard on day two of the 2013 Southern Conference Championships, moving up from four spots into sole possession of second place in the team standings behind a SoCon Championship record-tying team score of 291 Monday at the Moss Creek Golf Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The Spartans trimmed 24 shots off their first round score of 315 to set the league record for lowest score at the championships with a 291, matching the College of Charleston's second round score in 2006. UNCG, which entered the day in a tie for sixth place 18 shots off the lead, finished the second day alone in second place just nine shots behind three-time defending champion Chattanooga, which turned in a score of 300 Monday. The Spartans' 291 score included their four scoring numbers all under 5-over par, including two scores of even par or better. The score of 291 ties their best round of the 2012-13 season, matching the mark during the first round of the Cardinal Cup in the fall.
Sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) made an individual move up the leaderboard to lead the way for the Spartans as she tied the SoCon Championship record with a 4-under par 68 in round two. She moved up from a 15th-place tie (77) and sits alone in first place after 36 holes of the 54-hole event at 1-over par 145, improving her score nine strokes from day one. She posted four birdies on the afternoon on holes No. 2, 3, 6 and 14 while posting 14 pars for the clean slate.
Cnops' score of 68 is tied for the championship record-low with four other individuals in Angie Hill of College of Charleston (2006), Jenny Sun of Furman (2005), Polly Willett of UNCG (2004) and Jennifer Perri of Furman (2000). She leads the event by one stroke over a pair of Chattanooga golfers in Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon at 2-over par 146.
Senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) shaved six strokes off her score from day one, firing an even par 72 Monday to move into a tie for seventh overall with a 6-over par 150 (78-72). Taylor battled all day long as she opened with a double bogey on No. 1, while also posting bogeys on four holes but evened that out with six birdies, including five in the final seven holes of play. She notched birdies on holes No. 7, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17 helping her move up 14 spots in the individual standings.
Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) also turned in a strong score Monday, firing a 2-over par 74 to move into a tie for 13th place overall with a 154 (80-74). Buchanan posted three birdies on the afternoon and five bogeys in her solid outing.
Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) rebounded from a tough first round outing Sunday and fired a 5-over par 77 Monday as the Spartans' final counting score. Bjornsdottir recorded two birdies on holes No. 7 and No. 9 to finish even par through the first nine holes but posted three bogeys and a double bogey on hole No. 17 to card the score of 77.
The Spartans will battle for both the team and individual titles in the final round Tuesday at the Moss Creek Golf Club. Tee times for round three will be between 8:50-9:30a.m. for the Spartans.
