Women's Golf Finishes Third, Cnops & Taylor Finish In Top Five At SoCon Championships
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The UNCG women's golf team finished the 2013 Southern Conference Championship with a third place showing in the team standings and for the third time in program history the Spartans placed two golfers, sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) and senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook), in the top five of the individual standings at the Moss Creek Golf Club on Hilton Head Island.
Additionally, Cnops was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season. She is the sixth women's golfer in conference history to win the award multiple times and the first since Stefanie Kenoyer of Furman in 2009-10. She led the league in stroke average for the second straight year, posting a 73.09 clip over 23 rounds. She finished the year with four top five finishes, eight top 20 finishes and finished in the top 25 in all 10 events this season.
The Spartans placed third in the team standings with a 903 score (315-291-297), marking the 12th time in 16 years they have finished in the top three in SoCon Championship history. Their 903 score is 21 strokes lower than last year's total on the same course and is the second-lowest 54-hole score in program-history in the SoCon Championship, trailing only the 901 score set in 2000 (292-296-313).
Cnops finished just one shot out of the top spot with a 3-over par 219 in the 54-hole event after posting a 2-over par 74 Tuesday. She opened the day with a one-shot lead on the field after posting a SoCon Championship tying-record round of 4-under par 68 Monday. She posted three bogeys on the afternoon and notched a birdie on hole No. 3, before finishing the day with eight straight pars.
Cnops' 219 score is the second-lowest 54-hole score by a Spartan in SoCon Championship history, trailing only Jenny Gleason's 218 score in 2000. Additionally, this is the second straight year she has finished in the top five and the second year finishing one shot out of the lead as she placed second last year during her freshman campaign.
Taylor moved up to fifth place in the championships as she tallied the Spartans' top round of the day Tuesday with an even-par 72. She started slowly with bogeys on holes No. 1 and No. 3, while also hitting a double bogey on No. 4, before regrouping with four birdies over the final 11 holes. She notched birdies on holes No. 8, 9 , 12 and 17 to finish 2-under on the back nine.
Taylor recorded 10 birdies in the 54-hole event and her fifth place finish matches her career-best finish at the championship with her freshman season. Her score of 222 marked the fourth-lowest 54-hole score by a Spartan in SoCon Championship history.
Cnops and Taylor mark the third time in program history that UNCG has placed two golfers in the top five of the SoCon Championships and the first time since 2002. That year, UNCG had three of the top five golfers in Zuzana Kamasova (third), Jenny Gleason (fourth) and Briana Vega (fifth). The Spartans also placed three in the top five in 2000 with Gleason (second), Lotta Johnson (third) and Anna Hokkanen (fifth).
Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) concluded a strong rookie campaign with her highest finish of the year, placing 11th overall. Buchanan fired a career-best 229 on the three-day event to finish 13-over par, besting her previous high by two strokes (231 – FSU Match Up). She opened the event with an 8-over par 80, before rebounding with strong back-to-back rounds of 2-over par 74 and 3-over par 75 to close out the tournament.
Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) continued her climb up the leaderboard as well finishing in a tie for 19th overall. Bjornsdottir posted a 17-over par 233 as she bounced back from an opening round 80 to notch scores of 77 and 76 in her final two rounds of the year.
Freshman Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) rounded out the Spartans at the event as she finished 32nd overall with a 21-over par 237. Crane recorded consecutive scores of 80 in her first two rounds before finishing the year with a 5-over par 77 Tuesday.
Chattanooga won the SoCon team title for the fourth straight season with an 895, while UTC golfer Agathe Sauzon won the individual title in a one-hole playoff against the College of Charleston's Mary Chandler Bryan. Furman finished second overall in the team standings with a 901, just two strokes in front of the Spartans.
