GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's golfer Fanny Cnops will travel to State College, Pa., on Thursday to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's East Regional.
The tournament will be played on the Penn State Blue Course and is hosted by Penn State University.
The Spartan freshman is one of 378 participants that have been selected for three separate regional competitions May 10-12. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
The championships final will be held May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., hosted by Vanderbilt.
Cnops' rookie campaign featured eight top-10 performances including individual titles at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate and runner-up finishes at the Bryan National Collegiate and the Southern Conference Championships, where she was named SoCon Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
The Golfer of the Year award was the first in UNCG's program history. Cnops was a three-time SoCon Golfer of the Week this season and the league's golfer of the month for February. She led the league this season with a 72.34 stroke average.
Cnops burst onto the scene as a freshman this season, shooting four of the five lowest 54-hole totals in school history. She set a school record with her 209 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, including matching the school record with a final-round 67.
The Gent, Belgium, native is UNCG's first regional qualifier since 2003, when Jenny Gleason was selected to compete as an individual.
Cnops will tee off in the first grouping Thursday at 7:30 a.m.
