GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore women’s golfer Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) moved up 25 spots on the leaderboard during the first 36 holes of the 2013 UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic at the Starmount Forest Country Club Monday. Buchanan carded a career-low 3-under par 68 in round two to move from 33rd place after round one to a tie for eighth overall in round two.
Buchanan, who opened with a 6-over par 77 in the day’s first round, turned things around in round two shooting the second-lowest score of the day with her 3-under par 68 on the par 71 course. She started strong in the second round, recording two birdies on the front nine for a 2-under par at the turn. After a bogey on No. 11, she posted an eagle two on the 367-yard par-4 hole No. 12 to move to 3-under par.
Buchanan enters the final round five shots out of the lead and just three shots out of fourth place. Sarah Bee of High Point holds the 36-hole lead with a 2-under par 140 (70-70) while Chattanooga’s Agathe Sauzon and Campbell’s Kaylin Yost are tied for second just one shot back at 1-under par 141.
Buchanan’s play helped the Spartans sit in 12th place overall in the team standings with a 615 after scores of 313 in round one and a season-low 302 in round two. Southern Conference foe Chattanooga leads the team standings with a 578 (289-289) while Campbell is second at 588 (299-289) and Maryland is third at 590 (288-302).
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) enters Tuesday’s final round with for 28th place overall with a 9-over par 151. Bjornsdottir opened the tournament with a 2-over par 73 as she opened her day with an eagle on hole No. 1 before posting four bogeys.
Freshman Kristine Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) turned in her best round of the year with a 5-over par 76 in round two Monday. Powers enters the final round tied for 56th in the league with a 157 (81-76). Sophomore Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) posted a 162 to sit in 72nd place while freshman Maddie MacClurg (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) turned in a 159 to sit in 62nd place playing as an individual.
The third and final round begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Starmount Forest Country Club. Live scoring will be available via Golf Stat at www.uncgspartans.com.
