GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team continued its improvement each round and trimmed four strokes off its score in round three of the Lady Paladin Invitational Sunday at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville.
The Spartans improved between the first and second round by nine strokes Saturday and cut an additional four strokes off their score in the final round Sunday as they carded a 312 to finish with a 953. Wisconsin came from behind to win the team title with a three-round score of 865 while Clemson finished second with an 867.
George Regents Augusta, which had led after the first two rounds, rounded out the top three with a third place finish. Individually, Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson won the event with a 7-under 209, which is a tournament record for the Lady Paladin Invitational
Sophomore Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) paced the Spartans individually as she finished tied for 60th overall with a 234. Crane opened with a 78 before carding a 79 Saturday but posted her best round of the weekend Sunday with a 77.
Sophomore Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) moved up to 67th place overall as she turned in the Spartans’ best round of the weekend, firing a 3-over 75 Sunday. Buchanan finished with a 236, moving up seven places in the final round.
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) finished in 72nd place with a 239 (82-77-80). Freshman Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) added a 246 (87-79-80) while classmate Maddie MacClurg (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) turned in a score of 254 (88-81-85).
The 2013 Lady Paladin Invitational includes Clemson, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, George Regents, Georgia State, Houston, Kennessaw State, Nova Southeastern, Samford, Southern Miss, Texas A&M, UNC Wilmington, Wisconsin and Wofford.
The Spartans return to action when they host the Starmount Forest Invitational at the Starmount Forest County Club Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
