STATESBORO, Ga. – UNCG and Georgia Southern combined for 10 errors in a sloppy contest Saturday as the Eagles came out on top 10-6 to even the Southern Conference series at J.I. Clements Stadium.

GSU (25-12, 8-6 SoCon) out-hit the Spartans (16-17, 3-7 SoCon) 10-7 in the game and used a six-run fifth inning to build an advantage that was too much for the Blue and Gold to overcome.

Juniors Eric Kalbfleisch (Pilot Mountain, N.C./North Stokes) and Jordan McDonald (Perth, Australia/Chattanooga State) went 2-for-3 with Kalbfleisch adding two RBI, three runs scored and a home run. McDonald crossed the plate once in the game.

Taking the loss for the Spartans was junior Max Povse (4-3) (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) who allowed eight runs (two earned) on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Josh Wirsu (7-2) picked up the victory for Georgia Southern – throwing five innings and giving up five runs (two earned) with four walks and just one strikeout.

UNCG plated two runs in the first inning on a hit and two errors by the Eagles to take a 2-0 advantage early. Georgia Southern would tie the score with two outs in the bottom of the second on a weak ground ball single up the middle by C.J. Brazil.

The Spartans returned the favor in the top of the third, plating a run with two outs when junior L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Ohlone College) roped a single to left field to score Kalbfleisch.

Things fell apart for UNCG in the bottom of the fifth as they committed three errors and allowed the Eagles to put six runs on the board – making the score 8-3 after five complete.

Both squads scored two runs in the sixth inning to move the score to 10-5 before Kalbfleisch hit a two-out, solo home run in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.

UNCG and Georgia Southern will wrap up the series with the rubber game Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
