Softball Drops Series Finale against Furman, 12-10
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG softball team hit four home runs and scored 10 runs but it wasn’t enough as Furman rallied to a 12-10 victory Sunday afternoon at the Pepsi Softball Stadium.
The Spartans falls to 15-21, 3-9 in Southern Conference play while Furman improves to 20-18 overall record and is 7-4 in league play.
The Blue and Gold 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 9-for-12 with four home runs, eight runs scored and eight RBI. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI while sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was 4-for-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Her twin sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run.
Shelby Parker improved to 5-8 after throwing an inning in relief. Lauren Collier earned her fifth save getting out of a jam in the seventh to clinch the victory. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) was saddled with the loss falling to 7-13.
In the top of the seventh, Collier re-entered to save the game after starting in the series finale. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) singled and Lindsay Thomas singled up the middle. With two outs, Collier got the swinging strikeout to earn the sweep for the Paladins.
UNCG took an early lead after sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) blasted a solo home run to left field. The home run marked the 20th in her short career as a Spartan.
In the third inning, the Blue and Gold scored fives runs, including a three run blast from Bedwell. Bedwell has hit five home runs in her last six games. With two outs, senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) lined a two-run single to push UNCG’s lead to 6-0.
The Paladins rallied back with three runs off three hits in the bottom of the third. Lauren Collier had the big hit a two-run double to centerfield to make the score 6-3.
Bedwell gave the Spartans a 7-3 lead after launching her second home run of the game and seventh of the season in the fourth inning.
Furman stormed back with a nine-run fifth inning off five hits sending 13 Paladins to the plate. A key moment in the inning came with the bases loaded as Furman tied the game at 7-7 after a throwing error to home plate led to the runs. Ambree Muller provided the big blow a three-run triple. Elise Smith had a RBI double and Hannah Pace lined a RBI single. The Paladins took their first lead at 12-7.
In the top of the sixth, UNCG cut the lead to 12-10 after Nicole Thomas blasted a three-run shot to left field, her ninth of the season. Lindsay Thomas lined a one out single and Bedwell followed with a single to right field. Nicole Thomas leads the team with 38 RBI.
The Spartans return home for a midweek doubleheader against UNC Wilmington Wednesday, April 9 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
