Ten Student-Athletes Named SoCon Winter Academic All-Conference
GREENSBORO, N.C. – One hundred and sixty student-athletes earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2013-14 winter season, the league announced Tuesday. UNCG placed 10 student-athletes on the team, including members of women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field and women’s indoor track and field teams.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Leading the way for the Spartans is the indoor track and field team, which boasted seven members on the team, highlighted by sophomore Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) with her 3.99 GPA in psychology. Also making the team from women’s track was Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point), Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston), Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School), Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity).
The men’s indoor track and field team had two representatives on the Academic All-SoCon team in senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) and Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View). Rounding out the Spartans on the winter team is sophomore women’s basketball student-athlete Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) with a 3.88 GPA in African American Studies and Economics.
