GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover against North Carolina, 6-0, Thursday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans fall to 11-13 on the season while the Tar Heels improve to 14-11 with the victory.
Senior Lori Spingola (9-6) picked up the victory tossing five shutout innings, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) took the loss falling to 6-7 on the season in 2.2 innings. Hanks was charged with five unearned runs on three hits.
Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) went 1-for-3 and senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was 1-for-3. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) was 1-for-1 with a double and two walks.
North Carolina took the lead with a four-run first inning on two hits and a key error by the Spartans. With two outs, Kirsten Brown reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Jenna Kelly walked and Amber Parrish was hit to load the bases for the Tar Heels. Kati Causey walked to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead. Kendra Lynch lined a two-run double to left field to score two more runs. Darby Rosen worked a walk and Erin Satterfield followed with a single to second base to make it 4-0 UNC.
The Tar Heels added another run on a wild pitch from the Spartans. With two outs, North Carolina loaded the bases again as Lauren Walker reached on a wild pitch scoring the fifth run for North Carolina.
In the fourth inning, Elena Covert added a RBI single for North Carolina to push its lead to 6-0.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) came on in relief throwing 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run.
UNCG returns to SoCon play with a three-game series against Samford starting with a doubleheader Saturday, Mar. 22 at 1 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
