GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team opened the spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Central District Invitational hosted by Michigan State at the Cypress Links Golf Course at Lakewood Ranch in Florida. The Spartans finished 12th overall with a score if 948 (312-323-313) with their first round score of 312 tying for second-lowest mark of the season.
Vanderbilt won the team portion of the event with a 844 while Simin Feng of Vanderbilt and Allyss Ferrell of Michigan State won individual honors with 9-under 207 scores. The 14-team field at the Central District is one of the top fields in the country this week as six different ranked teams will take part in the event. Joining the Spartans will be No. 22 Central Florida, Chattanooga, Houston, Indiana, No. 37 Louisville, No. 24 Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 48 Notre Dame, Oakland, Rutgers, No. 45 SMU, Toledo and No. 15 Vanderbilt.
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) led the Spartans with a 47th place finish as she carded a 9-over par 225. Bjornsdottir opened the week with an even-par 72 before posting a 7-over 79 in round two and a 2-over 74 Tuesday to conclude play. Her even par score in round one was a season-low for Bjornsdottir while her 54-hole score of 225 was also her best showing of 2013-14.
Sophomore Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) was the Spartans second finisher, placing 53rd overall with an 11-over par 227. Buchanan was consistent over the three rounds as she carded a 76-76-75 in the 54-hole event. Freshmen Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and Maddie MacClurg (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) finished with scores of 249.
UNCG returns to the course March 2-4 at the Kiawah Invitational at Cougar Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. The 54-hole event will see 18 rounds played each day.
