GREENVILLE, S.C. – The fourth-seeded UNCG volleyball team lost its Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Friday morning, dropping a three-set (25-19, 25-23, 25-11) decision to No. 5 seed Appalachian State inside Furman’s Timmons Arena. The Spartans end the season at 17-13 overall.

Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers (College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated) paced the UNCG attack with 11 kills while completing her 12th double-double of the season with 10 digs. She made 10 errors, however, hitting .028 in the match. Senior middle hitter Olivia Humphries (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) ended her Spartan career with seven kills and freshman setter Sara Hohman (Zionsville, Ind./Cathedral) tallied 26 assists to go along with six digs.

The Mountaineers hit .358 in the match, making just eight errors, while limiting the Spartans to a .164 performance. ASU also held the upper hand in kills (47-37) and blocks (5.0-3.0) and both teams finished with 48 digs.

The first set was a back and forth affair at the beginning as neither team took more than a two-point lead early on. The Mountaineers were able to push ahead 12-9 after an attacking error by senior middle hitter Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va./University of Connecticut) but a kill by Chambers kept Appalachian State close. With the score 13-11 in favor of the Mountaineers, ASU was able to score two-straight points to move further in front 15-11. UNCG would not get closer than three points the rest of the way as Appalachian State clinched the frame 25-19.

A kill by Freeman saw the Spartans take a 3-2 lead in the second stanza, but the Mountaineers notched five-straight points to force a UNCG timeout. Chambers put down a kill later in the set to keep the Blue and Gold within 14-12, but ASU would be able to hold the Spartans off and take a 21-16 lead after a kill by Lauren Gray.

UNCG made a move late in the set, going on a 6-2 run to pull within 24-22. An attacking error by Emily Corrigan kept the Spartans alive for another rally, but she responded with a kill on the next play to give Appalachian State the frame 25-23.

The Mountaineers raced out to a 10-4 advantage in the third set looking to complete the sweep as the Blue and Gold signaled for timeout. UNCG had no answer for Appalachian and the Mountaineers kept the pressure on – extending the lead to 13-5 and forcing another Spartan timeout. ASU would push through to the end, completing the sweep 25-11.
