Volleyball Suffers Sweep at Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG volleyball team could not pull off a season sweep of Furman Friday, falling in three sets (19-25, 19-25, 18-25) to the Paladins at Alley Gym in a Southern Conference match.
The Paladins (14-10, 10-3 SoCon) hit .417 in the match while limiting the Spartans to a .245 showing. Both teams racked up 35 digs and two blocks. The Paladins also tallied more kills (48-40) and assists (45-36).
Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers (College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated) led the Spartans with 14 kills and a .520 hitting percentage while freshman outside hitter Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) added 10 kills. Junior middle hitter Vicky Harley (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) hit .462 and freshman setter Sara Hohman (Zionsville, Ind./Cathedral) led the team with 20 assists. Sophomore libero Katherine Santiago (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) paced the defensive efforts with eight digs.
UNCG jumped out to an early 7-6 lead in set one, before Jo Wilks sparked the Paladins on a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. The teams then traded points and UNCG cut the Paladin lead to two at 15-13, but Furman then used a 5-1 run to push their lead out to 20-14. UNCG could not overcome the deficit and the Paladins took set one, 25-19.
The Spartans again took the early lead in set two at 7-5, but Furman battled back to tie the set at seven and later at 10. Furman took a 13-11 lead before UNCG tied the stanza at 13 points apiece. The Paladins then used a 7-3 run to jump out to a 20-16 lead and force a UNCG timeout. The Spartans scored out of the timeout to cut the lead to 20-17, but Furman closed the match on a 5-2 run to take set two 25-19.
The Paladins raced out to a 17-9 lead to open the third stanza and forced a UNCG timeout. After the timeout, the Spartans cut the lead to 17-11, but the Paladins continued to add to their lead - making it 23-14. UNCG used a 4-1 run to cut the Furman lead to 24-18, but the Paladins finished the set on a kill by Andrea Fisher to win set three 25-18 and complete the sweep.
UNCG returns to action tomorrow night at Wofford. First serve at Benjamin Johnson Arena is set for 6 p.m.
