Men's Track & Field Concludes Day One At SoCon Championships
STATESBORO, Ga. – The UNCG men's track and field program concluded day one of the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern at Eagle Field Saturday. Day two of the event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a live scoring link available at www.uncgspartans.com.
Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) turned in the Spartans top finish Saturday with a ninth-place showing in the 10,000-meter distance. Kemboi finished in a time of 31:59.61 while sophomore Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) placed 10th in the race with a time of 32:09.66. Sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), the defending champion at the distance, did not race this year as he is running in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races Sunday.
Freshman John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) turned in his top outdoor time at the 800-meter distance Saturday. Elwood placed 18th overall with a time of 2:00.77.
The Spartans also ran two in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on day one of the championships. Senior Taylor Day (Cornelius, N.C./Hopewell) placed 13th in the event with a time of 9:55.28 while sophomore Eric Williams (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) came in right after him in 14th place with a time of 9:55.47.
Sunday will see both Katam and junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) battle for Southern Conference titles in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races. Chelimo is the top rated runner in both distances while Katam has the second-fastest time in the 1,500-meter race this year.
