GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG track and field junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for May 1, the league office announced Wednesday. This is the second SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honor for Chelimo this year as he was honored Oct. 31 during cross country season.

Chelimo turned in the 10th fastest time in NCAA Division I and the third fastest time in the NCAA East Region this year with his performance in the 5,000-meter race at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford. He posted the third-fastest time of his career at 13:36.27, which is 21 seconds faster than any other runner in the SoCon this season and 33 seconds better than any other non-UNCG runner this year.

Chelimo placed 19th in the heat at the Payton Jordan, a heat that included former Olympians, professional runners and only four collegians. He owns a 3.68 GPA in public health/nursing.
