Katam & Chelimo Set For NCAA East Preliminary Round This Week In Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) and junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) have earned bids into 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Round to be held May 23-25 on the campus of North Carolina A&T at the Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium.
Qualifying teams and individuals advance to the 2013 NCAA Division Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
Katam earned a spot in the 10,000-meter race after qualifying 13th in the NCAA East Region. The 10,000-meter race will be run Thursday night at 9:40 p.m. Katam's top time this season was 29:21.87 at the Stanford Invitational, his only race at the distance this season. Michael Fout of Florida State is the top qualifier in the region with a time of 28:52.77.
Katam is also the reigning champion in the NCAA East Regional after winning the race with a time of 30:05.74 in the hot weather in Jacksonville, Fla., marking the program's first-ever regional title. He earned Second Team All-America honors in the 10,000-meter race last year when he finished ninth overall with a UNCG program-record time of 29:10.65.
Chelimo is the No. 2 qualifier in the NCAA East Region in the 5,000-meter race, which will run Saturday night at 8:45 p.m. He set his top time this season of 13:36.27 in the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford. Northeastern's Eric Jenkins is the top qualifier with a time of 13:18.57, also set at Stanford.
Chelimo is the reigning NCAA East Region champion in the distance after winning the race last year with a time of 30:05.74. He advanced to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, where he placed second overall with a time of 14:00.51 to earn All-America status.
