Chelimo Named SoCon Men's Outdoor Track Athlete Of The Week 04-02-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) has been named the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

Chelimo finished ninth in the 5,000-meter race at the prestigious Stanford Invitational. His time of 13:42.03 is the fastest time in the SoCon this season by nearly 28 seconds and has hit currently ranked third in the NCAA East Region and fifth in the nation.

Chelimo finished last season as national runner-up in the 5,000-meter distance when he posted a time of 13:41.04. His time this weekend is still 21 seconds behind his personal-best time of 13:21.89, set last year at the Payton Jordan Invitational.

Additionally, sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) earned weekly honorable mention honors after placing 21st in the 10,000-meter race. Katam posted a time of 29:21.87 and is 89 seconds faster than any other runner in the SoCon this season. His time ranks ninth in the NCAA East Region and 16th in the nation so far this year.
