Chelimo Wins Mile Race To Lead Track & Field At High Point VertKlasse 03-22-2013


HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) won the prestigious Bob Davidson Mile race Saturday to highlight the UNCG men's track and field program at the High Point VertKlasse Meet at Vert Stadium.

Chelimo posted a mile time of 4:08.06 to out-touch Davidson's Andrew Lantz who tallied a time of 4:08.50. This marked the first time this season he has run the mile distance outdoors after posting a time of 4:06.27 during the indoor season. Sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:11.06.

Freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) placed second in the 800m part race, posting a persona-record time of 1:54.93. Crawford trimmed over two seconds off his previous best time of 1:56.98. Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) finished fifth in the race, his first career race at the 800m distance in the outdoor at 1:56.93.

Junior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) rounded out the Spartans' top 10 finishers Saturday as he placed third in the mile secondary run in a time of 4:19.14.

The Spartans return to action next weekend with a pair of events as the squad splits between the Raleigh Relays and the Stanford Invitational.
