Paul Chelimo Named Capital One Academic All-District
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior runner Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team for men's track and field/cross country, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Chelimo will now be entered with all other first team selections across the eight districts nationally and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Chelimo, a native of Chebiemit, Kenya, owns a 3.68 GPA in nursing/public health. He recently won the 2013 NCAA East Regional Championship in the outdoor track 5,000-meter race by over 10 seconds. He has advanced to the NCAA National Championships in the same distance where he finished as national runner-up in 2012. His time of 13:49.94 is the fifth-fastest qualifying time heading into the National Championships next week in Eugene, Ore.
During the indoor track and field season, Chelimo won the Southern Conference Championship in the 3,000-meter race. The title was his sixth league championship in his first two years of completion in both track and field and cross country. He turned in his fastest time of the year in the 3,000-meter distance with a time of 8:06.71 at the Flotrack Husky Classic.
Chelimo was named the SoCon Runner of the Year for the second straight cross country season after winning the SoCon Championships with a time of 23:42.22. He posted the three fastest times in the conference in the 8,000-meter distance. He finished second in the NCAA Southeast Regional, setting a UNCG-program record with a time of 29:36.51. He capped his cross country season with an All-America honor by placing 10th in the NAA National Championship race in Louisville.
Chelimo's Academic All-District honor marks the second straight year that UNCG track and field has been honored. Former Spartan Joey Thompson earned Academic All-District accolades last season in his senior campaign.
