PRs fall at Virginia Challenge
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the UNCG men's and women's track and field teams performed well at the Virginia Challenge late Saturday evening, setting a pair of personal records.
Paul Katam, the lone Spartan male competing at the meet, was runner-up in the 5,000 meters, and Shaina Sumney knocked 12 seconds off her personal best in the same event.
In his first race since being crowned the Southern Conference 10,000-meter champion, Katam recorded a time of 14:04.56 in the 5k Saturday, a new personal best for the sophomore.
Sumney recorded a time of 16:35.00, which replaced the personal record she set at the Penn Relays just two weeks ago. Her sister, Chelsea Sumney, finished close by in 14th place with a time of 16:49.29.
Kerry Hartman ran a stellar race in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 4:28.75, just one second off her personal best time.
The Spartans' next competition will be the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 24-26.
