Katam wins 10,000m title on first day of SoCon Championships
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Paul Katam started the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships off well for UNCG with a commanding victory in the first event of the day, the 10,000 meters, as the Spartan men are in seventh after Saturday's first day of competition at Western Carolina's Catamount Athletic Complex. The UNCG women are eighth as a team.
Katam won the 10,000m with a time of 31:26.09, running his last mile in 4:19. Freshman Dylan Belles also competed in the event, finishing 11th with a time of 33:53.46 to earn SoCon All-Freshman honors.
In the women's 10,000m, Ginny Cronley got UNCG on the board with four early points after a fifth-place finish in a time of 37:10.33.
Senior Taylor Hurst is moving on to the finals in the 800 meters after posting the second-fastest time of the day in the prelims with a 1:52.74. The time was a personal-best for Hurst, who qualified for Sunday's finals automatically after winning his section of the prelims.
Shannon Hall was not far off her personal best in the 800m after finishing prelims in 18th place with a time of 2:19.66.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Brian Carrington finished in eighth place with a personal-best time of 9:26.71. Eric Williams was not far behind placing 12th place, crossing the line in 10:03.55 to earn all-freshman honors.
Kelly Montague had a good showing in the 3,000m steeplechase, as she crossed the line in 11:57.92, good for seventh place.
After day one, UNCG's men sit in seventh place as a team with 11 points. Appalachian State is atop the standings with 60 points. The UNCG women's team is currently in eighth place with six points. The Mountaineer women are also in the lead with 61 points.
The second day of competition will begin Sunday at 12 p.m.
