GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team returns to action quickly as it wraps non-conference play Thursday afternoon with the Spartans hosting NAIA foe Southeastern University. Game time is set for a rare weekday 5 p.m. tip-off and will be played on campus at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans (8-4) are coming off a tough 67-60 loss Tuesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum to UNC Asheville. UNCG had its worst offensive half of the year in the second half, scoring just 15 points while shooting just 21.7 percent (5-of-21) from the field and only 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from 3-point land in the final 20 minutes. UNC Asheville scored the game’s final 12 points to rally past the Spartans. The loss snapped the Spartans’ four-game winning streak and was their first loss at home this year (6-1).

Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) led three in double figures with 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) added 12 points on just 4-of-12 shooting while sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) scored 10 points, but only took three field goals in the game.

Alonso leads the team in scoring at 17.6 points per game and has hit a team-high 44 3-pointers. He is shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 86.1 percent (31-of-36) from 3-point land. Smith, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, is second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game while adding 4.7 rebounds per game. He is second on the team with 26 made 3-pointers, connecting on 34.7 percent.

Dickey leads the team on the glass grabbing 8.7 rebounds per game, including a team-high 40 offensive rebounds. He is third on the team in scoring at 8.1 points per game and is shooting 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field. Freshman guard Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) chips in 7.4 points per game off the bench, shooting 52.7 percent (39-of-74) from the field.

Junior guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) adds 6.9 points per game and is second on the team with 40 assists. Troy has hit 16 3-pointers this season. Senior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) is second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game while adding 6.8 points per game.

Southeastern University is located in Lakeland, Fla., and is an NAIA member. The Fire own an 11-2 overall record and already has a 5-0 mark in conference play. Southeastern’s two losses this year have come at Allen (S.C.) and home to Saint Francis (Ind.). The Fire is averaging 88.0 points per game while allowing 74.3 points per game against on the year.

Ryan Atkins leads Southeastern in scoring at 22.2 points per game, scoring 266 points already on the year. Allen also adds 5.0 rebounds per game and a team-high 25 steals. He is shooting 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from 3-point land and has already gone to the free throw line 103 times, connecting on 85.4 percent.

C.J. Reese is second on the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game while adding 4.4 rebounds per game. Reese leads the team with 66 assists and has also been to the free throw line frequently this year, making 56 attempts at 73.2 percent. Grant Bryan leads the Fire on the glass with 6.5 rebounds per game while adding 9.5 points per game.
