GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro women’s tennis team will host its third home match of the spring season on Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Spartans welcome intrastate foe UNC Asheville to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
The Spartans (0-2) remain in search of their first team win of the season after a hard-fought match with Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 2, which resulted in a 4-3 setback.
“We’ve had a great week of practice,” said head coach Ale Guerra. “We focused on the things that we needed to improve from last match and the girls are prepared and reach for our match with UNC Asheville.”
Three Spartans, including Eugenia Camacho, Brianna Gomez and Sophia Adams emerged with singles wins in the clash against Coastal Carolina. Camacho grabbed the first singles win of the slate for UNCG with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alexa Tiefel in a clash of fifth seeds.
Gomez claimed a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 triumph against fourth-seeded Alicza Zduniak, while Adams came through with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 victory against Jennifer Brown in the meeting of No. 3 seeds.
UNC Asheville (4-1) enters the match riding a three-match winning streak following triumphs over North Greenville (6-1), Mars Hill (7-0) and Western Carolina (5-2) in succession. The Bulldogs are led in wins by Lize Alet Morkel, who is a perfect 5-0 in singles play, and Taylor Love who comes into the weekend with a 4-1 mark in singles. In doubles, UNC Asheville is led by the duos of Love / Morkel, who are 3-0 as a tandem, and Hannah Francisco / Kylee Shipley, who own a 3-1 mark.
