Doubles Dominate in Day Two of the Elon Fall Invitational
ELON, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis saw good success in the doubles portion on the second day of the Elon Fall Invitational Saturday afternoon. The doubles teams went a combined 4-0 on the day.
In Maroon singles, Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) dropped her second match in the double-elimination tournament, falling to Marija Venta of Longwood, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. Nancy Bridges’ (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) wrapped up play after falling to Emory’s Bridget Harding, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. Taylor will face Somer Dall-Bona of Coastal Carolina tomorrow, with Bridges taking on Elon’s Maria Paraja at 11 a.m.
Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) and Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) competed in the Gold bracket. Adams, having won her match yesterday, took on Xandra Fougner of UNCW and fell 6-2, 7-5. Adams will battle with Appalachian State’s Heidi Swope at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. Boaz dropped her matchup with Becca Morse of Appalachian State, and will play Sarah Horn of UNCW at 11 Sunday morning.
In Powell singles, Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) played tough but fell 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to Emory’s Stephanie Taylor. Ory will be opposed by NC Central’s Jamie Rogers Sunday at 11. Blythe earned a straight-set victory over NC Central’s Rogers, 6-4, 6-2. Blythe takes on Emory’s Emma Perelman at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
Tayah Cross (Queensland, Australia/Matthew Flinders Anglican College) and Brianna Gomez (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) both won their first two matches in the Phoenix bracket. As their reward, the Spartans will battle each other at 10 a.m. tomorrow to see how will be the champion of the Phoenix bracket.
The pair of Bridges and Boaz teamed up for their first doubles action of the season in the Maroon bracket. The pair defeated UNCW’s Madara Straume and Thai Thompson, 8-1. The Spartans will take on Alory Periera and Ioanna Markensini of ETSU tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Gold doubles saw Taylor and Ory team easily defeat Emory’s Perelman and Stephanie Taylor, 8-1. The Spartans will matchup with ETSU’s Jayde Viccars and Melissa Esguerra at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
Adams and Blythe advanced to the championship round of the Powell doubles, following an 8-3 victory over UNCW’s Fougner and Sarah Horn. The UNCG tandem will battle with Coastal Carolina’s Jesse Mount and Natalie Wall tomorrow at 9 a.m.
After falling in their first match as partners yesterday, Cross and Gomez received a bye and will take on Appalachian State’s Taylor Bygrave and Morse at 9 a.m.
In extra matches, the pair of Boaz and Bridges earned an 8-2 win over UNCW’s Rachel Marthinson and Appalachian State’s Marissa Anthony.
