GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNC Greensboro softball opened up fall ball play last weekend with a trio of games including a home contest against North Carolina A&T last Friday in which the Spartans defeated the Aggies 16-2 in 10 innings. 

Traveling to South Carolina for a pair of games on Saturday, UNCG defeated Appalachian State 2-1 and Queens 7-4. 

UNCG 16, North Carolina A&T 2 [10 innings]
The Spartans opened up scoring when Delaney Cumbie was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first inning and scored following back-to-back walks by Makenna Matthijs and Jasmine Palmer. UNCG also added a run courtesy a bloop single by Samantha Lagrama

In the third inning, Palmer reached base off a hit by pitch and came around to score after a single up the middle by Kayleigh Willis. The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth inning, as the Spartans tacked on four runs. 

Then in the seventh inning, UNCG plated six runs while Cumbie recorded a triple. 

In the ninth inning, Maycin Brown hit a two-run home run to center. 

On the mound, Kylie Bouplon started the game and pitched four complete innings where she recorded two strikeouts and surrendered just one run and one hit. Hannah Stiltner entered the game in the top of the fifth to replace Bouplon and pitched three complete inning, striking out four while giving up three hits. 

Freshman, Morgan Scott closed out the game pitching the last three innings. Against nine batters faced, Scott struck out four while not allowing a single base runner. 

UNCG 2, Appalachian State 1
The Spartans’ two runs in the victory over the Mountaineers came in the fourth inning. After Matthijs opened the frame with a lead-off walk, Willis belted a two-run home run. 

Stiltner, meanwhile, pitched a complete game and allowed just a single run in the first inning before holding Appalachian State scoreless over the final six innings. For the game, the junior struck out six and allowed just four hits. 

UNCG 7, Queens 4
UNCG concluded the weekend with a three-run victory over Queens. 

Five of the Spartans’ seven runs came in the fifth inning, courtesy a double by Matthijs and back-to-back singles by Palmer and Lagrama along with a hit by pitch by Willis, a walk by Brown and a third single in the inning by Ashley Gontram

Cumbie was once again a factor, smacking a solo home run in the second inning. 

Morgan Scott was the game’s starting pitcher for the Spartans, as she faced nine batters over the first three innings. She registered five strikeouts without a run or hit surrendered. Hannah Kincer appeared on the mound after Scott, giving up two runs and five hits. 

Freshmen Alex Rodriguez and Greyson Way relieved Kincer, combining to strike out three.
