Softball Opens UNCG Invitational With 12-5 Win Over Seton Hall
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (8-2) scored eight unanswered runs in the last two innings at the plate to defeat Seton Hall (5-5) 12-5 in the first day of the UNCG Invitational on Friday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central), Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) and Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) each hit a home run for the Spartans.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning down 5-4, UNCG scored three runs in the inning to take back the lead. Sholtes lead off with a double to left field, and Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) singled up the middle to score Sholtes. With one-out Gontram hit her third homer of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
In the next inning Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) beat out a throw by the pitcher for an infield single with one out. After Sholtes drew a walk, Palmer loaded the bases with an infield single. Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) brought home Cubbage and Palmer with a single through the right side. With two outs Willis pounced on the first pitch she saw and blasted her first home run of the season to center field near the Spartan statue for the final three runs of the game.
After trailing 4-0, Seton Hall scored five-straight runs to take the lead. The Pirates’ first run came on a one-out solo home run to right field in the second inning.
The game was tied up one inning later. With two outs and nobody on base, Seton Hall first scored on a RBI-double to right field. A single up the middle in the next bat knocked in the other two runs.
The Pirates took their only lead of the game in the fourth inning on another RBI-double to left center field.
Relief pitcher Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) recorded nine-straight outs to end the game and picked up her first win of the year. In four innings pitched Bouplon gave up two hits, one run and no walks with two strikeouts. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) started in the circle and allowed five hits, four runs and one walk with three strikeouts.
UNCG opened the game with four runs in the first inning. Leadoff batter Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) and scored on a single up the middle by Cubbage. Sholtes then homered to center field for her fourth home run of the season. Palmer singled through the left side, and McClaskey singled reached on a throwing error by the first baseman that allowed Palmer to go to third base. Willis hit a RBI-single to center field for the final run of the inning.
The Spartans had seven different batters combine for 15 hits, and each run was produced by a RBI-hit. Palmer went 4-4 with two runs and a RBI, and Willis was 3-4 with four RBIs. Sholtes went 2-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a walk, and Cubbage had two hits, two runs and a RBI.
UNCG will play in back-to-back games on Saturday in the home invitational, facing Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. and Virginia afterwards.
