MADEIRA BEACK, Fla. – UNCG softball (7-2) scored six-straight runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 6-2 comeback win over Lipscomb (5-2) on Sunday afternoon at Rec Center Field 2 in the final day of the Eastern Michigan Madeira Beach Spring Invitational. Makenna Matthijs’ (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) grand slam, her first collegiate home run, capped the six-run inning for the Spartans.

Matthijs’ game-winning hit was her third just two weeks into the season. She delivered walk-off hits in a 3-2 win over UMKC on Saturday and 9-8 comeback win over Saint Francis (Pa.) last Saturday.

UNCG entered the final inning with just two hits all game. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) led off with a single to left field, and Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) singled to center field with one out. Down to its final out after a fly out, Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) singled up the middle to knock in Sholtes. Becca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) tied the game up with her single up the middle and kept the bases loaded for Matthijs’ game-winning grand slam.

Lipscomb was able to get runners on second and third base on an infield single and fielding error, but Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) ended the game with a groundout that she fielded and tossed to first baseman Sholtes.

Bazonski (4-1) registered her second-straight complete game, scattering 11 hits with one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Bison scored both of their runs in the fourth inning with the help of two errors. With two out an error on a RBI-double to left field allowed the runner to advance to third base, and an error right afterwards allowed her to score.

McClaskey was the only Spartan to collect two hits on the day with a double to center field that led off the sixth inning.

The Spartans will return back to Greensboro next weekend for their first home-opener in the UNCG Invitational. Welcoming Seton Hall, Appalachian State and Virginia, UNCG will take on Seton Hall first on Friday in the second game of the day at 2:30 p.m.
