Men's Tennis Dominates Presbyterian to Earn Its First Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis dominated the Presbyterian Blue Hose Sunday morning at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, easily winning 7-0. With the win, UNCG improves to 1-1 on the season, while the loss drops Presbyterian to 0-4. The Spartans swept doubles action to earn the initial point before sweeping all six singles matches.

UNCG got the scoring going with a clean sweep of the doubles competition. Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) handled No. 2 doubles, defeating Daniel Stenger and Jaime Castillo-Lopez, 6-1. Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) teamed with freshman Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) to defeat Luis Conde and Alejandro Bejar, 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) teamed up to defeat Alex Lykou and Brandon Mills, 6-3 at No. 1 to finish up the doubles sweep.

Singles action featured the same fate for the Blue Hose. Burkill was the first to finish his match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Conde at No. 6. Melnik followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stenger at No. 5 before Vidgren took care of Bejar, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Thompson defeated Lykou in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 with Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Ava Gymnasium) outlasting Castillo-Lopez in the most competitive match of the afternoon, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8) at No. 4. Palmer improved his singles record to 2-0 on the season after knocking off Mills in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
