GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s cross country team placed fifth overall and the men’s program finished sixth as a team at the 2017 Southern Conference Championships hosted by Wofford at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C. This marks the second-straight year the women have placed fifth and is a two-spot improvement for the men’s program after finishing eighth last season.
The women’s team earned 164 points to finish in fifth place, edging out Wofford for the spot on a tiebreaker. Furman once again won the team title with 23 points, picking up spots No. 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8. Samford was second with 43 points followed by ETSU in third with 97 points and Chattanooga is fourth with 141. Allie Buchalski of Furman won the individual title with a time of 16:21.60.
Freshman Ariana Garcia (Beulaville, N.C./East Duplin) was the Spartans’ top finisher on the women’s side, placing 23rd overall with a time of 18:28.10. Classmate India Godlock (Polk County, N.C./Polk County) was second on the team in 27th pace with a time of 18:41.20 as both freshmen were running the distance for just the second time in their UNCG careers. Both Garcia and Godlock earned SoCon All-Freshman Team accolades for their performances.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stone (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Stokes) finished 33rd overall in a time of 18:54.80 while sophomore Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) turned in a time of 19:07.70 to finish in 43rd place. Freshman Kassidy Dill (Milford, Maine/Orono) rounded out the Spartans’ top-five performers in 59th place with a time of 19:45.80.
The men’s team posted a sixth place finish in the SoCon Championships, posting 195 total points, edging Western Carolina by 10 points. Furman won the team title once again, sweeping the top five spots and seven of the top eight spots to finish with 15 points. ETSU was second with 61 points followed by Samford (78), Chattanooga (120) and VMI (160).
Junior William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing 20th overall with a time of 25:46.80. This marks Sandin’s best finish at the SoCon Championships, eclipsing his 49th place showing last year.
Freshman Juan Rodriguez finished 35th overall with a time of 26:39.10. Rodriguez was named to the SoCon’s All-Freshman Team for his performance Saturday morning. Sophomore Trelek Jones (Lynchburg, Va./Wake Forest) improved 12 spots from last year’s SoCon Championship race, finishing in 54th place overall this year with a time of 27:25.80. Freshman Weston Clayton (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) and Jonathan Timothy (Greenville, N.C.) rounded out the top-five finishers for the Spartans with times of 27:42.60 and 28:16.50, respectively.
