GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits in a tie for eighth place after the first two rounds of the Autotrader Collegiate hosted by Georgia State at the par-72, 6,694-yard Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga. The Spartans close out the two-day, 54-hole event Monday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans posted a 15-over par 591 score on the day, opening with an even-par 288 in round one before turning in a 15-over par 303 in round two. Georgia Southern holds the overall lead by 23 strokes with an 18-under par 558 (283-275) while host Georgia State is second at 5-over par 581 (292-289). Steven Fisk of Georgia Southern has a seven-stroke lead with a 12-under par 132 (66-66), individually.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) leads the Spartans after two rounds in 13th place with a 1-over par 145. Lyerly opened with a 1-under par 71 in round one before carding a 2-over par 74 in round two. He is seventh in the field with 26 par scores. He posted three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars in round one before notching two birdies and 13 pars in round two.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) opened his Autotrader Collegiate much like he ended the last tournament, posting a 3-under par 69 in round one to sit in second place after 18-holes. Hendrix followed that up with a 7-over par 79 in round two and finished the day in a tie for 29th place at 4-over par 148. He tallied four birdies, one bogey and 13 pars in round one but didn’t notch any birdies in round two.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) is also tied for 29th place overall at 4-over par 148. Brightwell opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one with two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars before carding a 3-over par 75 in round two. He recorded four birdies in the second round but a quadruple bogey on hole No. 10 did him in. He finished fifth in the field in par-4 scoring at even-par.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) turned in a 55th place showing with an 8-over par 152. Stockwell posted rounds of 75-77 on the day, recording three birdies in each round. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 81th place with a 13-over par 157 (80-77). Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) played as an individual and posted a 9-over par 153 (78-75) to finish in 64th place.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes host Georgia State, Chattanooga, Augusta, Kansas, Notre Dame, Lipscomb, Boston College, Yale, Winthrop, Francis Marion, Richmond, Georgia Southern, Davidson, Bowling Green and Mississippi State.
